Quintessential Ankara styles has gotten a bit of a not-so good reputation seeing that there were limited styles that made no sense because there were waves upon waves of European wears flooding the market, this time period starts from the nineties and ended just a few years ago. Within this time period, skirt & blouse, iro and buba which was considered the culture of that time was hyper saturated. Of cause these looks were unadventurous and revolved around the same theme. Within this time frame a hot new designer Lisa Folawiyo rejected these sartorial cliches and decided to start a new line focused on Ankara using stones for embellishment. This upended all the expected style; designers began to sit up and the new wave was born.
Fast forward to 2015/2016 and the wave hit the continent as well as diaspora, with emerging designers setting the tone for better boundary pushing and cool new Ankara styles, all of this now in contrast to the older styles. Also thankful to celebrities and social media for pushing the wear African agenda giving birth to new, better and more complex Ankara designs that is a far cry from the simply woven skirt and blouse or iro and buba.
Today we have found that there are cool new Ankara styles that are emerging once again and as usual we are here to find you with the best. Let’s take a quick or not so quick look at the latest Ankara styles below…
