I believe a true African would always love the Ankara fabric not because it seemed we were tailored to like it but for what it represents. I for one Have always been in love with the fabric; I’ve loved the colours and hues, I’ve loved the soft feel and texture and let’s not forget the masterful design strokes. For me the African print poses a dramatic allure that gives voice to the wearer.
For our fore-mothers and fathers who weren’t required to not wear it everyday, the material for them functioned as a sartorial liberation as they were not under any form of guideline as to wearing anything different. Unfortunately even with the knowledge that our ancestors wore the piece gracefully according to the fashion of old, many modern women still fail to see it’s charm.“I hate wearing anything with too much colour”, “I can’t seem to style it properly” are what some women have stated in no uncertain terms, on the other hand there are women who apparently love every minute and moment they wear their Ankara print.
For those women who find the beauty in the print and the latest styles we say yes girl! yes you can, because here’s the thing: Once you have the Ankara print fabric you can transform it into a swishy skirt, a 21st century dress- you could also pair it with jeans, create a two-piece, the list goes on.
