Lets talk about the african print wax “Ankara” and yes african print not the capital of Turkey. The Ankara is famously worn by africans ( yes dolls not just Nigerians) and it can be said to be one of the most versatile fabrics because there is almost no limit to what can be created with its use. The Ankara fabric is of a certain style, its not so much the fabric as it is what the fabric represents. Indeed the Ankara wax print in itself is made of cotton which is woven tightly and then painted with patterns an motifs that resonates with the african culture as a whole (when you see the peacock fabric you know that it means something to us in this part of the world in other words wearing a beautifully woven peacock fabric makes us confident and proud). Nowadays because like I said above its more of the meaning and representations of the fabric than it is about the actual material motifs are now being transferred to other fabrics like chiffon, silk, rayon, spandex etc and they are all referred to as Ankara.
The transference of motifs to other fabrics have thus followed the evolution of the african identity and so you can get these prints in outfits like, socks, bathing suits, sports bra, leggings etc. This has enabled a more wide spread acceptance because of the fabric variety and now designers and their creativity have become unstoppable.
