When it comes to soup preparation in nigeria, the basis for all soups is the use of palm oil but this doesn’t always sit well with fit-fam people or those on a low fat diet. There is however a soup that you can enjoy that doesn’t require the use of palm oil; Popular among the Warri people is the soup known as the gbagbafofo.
The Gbagbafofo or oil-less seafood okra is the merging of okra and pepper soup to form a delicious pot of tasty goodness with seafood ingredients that includes, prawn, shrimps, crayfish etc. This lovely soup is best served fresh and its a perfect cold weather recipe. What makes this soup is the fact that it doesn’t require the use of palm oil which according to nutritionist contains a lot of fat and oil and therefore too much of it for people on a low-fat diet has to be avoided at all cost.
This oil-less seafood okra can be served when you have friends or family over, its different from the norm and people would definitely appreciate the spicy taste (thanks to the pepper soup ingredients). The ways you can serve this dish would be to use swallows such as, pounded yam, eba, wheat, semo etc or you could just have it on its own if you so desire.

- Any type of fish you prefer (Smoked and Fresh)
- King Prawn or Crabs
- Pepper soup spices
- Chicken stock (optional)
- Chicken, meat or fresh fish
- Cray Fish
- Seasoning Cube
- Black pepper
