Today we are leaving the shore’s of nigerian and going over to the tropical country of our west African sister “Ghana”… Just like nigeria, Ghana has a blend of old and new cuisine’s that are just as rich and fascinating. Ghanaian cuisine is full of traditional recipe’s and one of such is the Waakye pronounced as waachay.
The Waakye (Waachay) is a rice and beans competition which was mainly popular in the northern part of Ghana but become a nation wide meal that both adults and children love. This food also gained so much more popularity as a street food and you can find it in many of the west African countries including nigeria.
Now, like I said earlier the waakye is a popular street food not only in Ghana but in nigeria as well, when you go to some choice spots in Lagos you can get it. This meal is perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner and then it is served with boiled egg, stewed fish or chicken, beef and vegetables.
This is what you need for the meal;
- 2 cups of rice
- 1 cup of black eyed pea or red beans (or any kind of beans you want)
- Salt to taste
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda or 4 dry sorghum leaves

Ummm looks yum, the waakye almost recembles the Caribbean rice and peas and what do you think that means? This is to tell you that the waakye is certainly a very old meal dating centuries back and the fact that its still enjoyed today is just delightful.
